Opening an Opening

Opening, the connection between the interior and outdoor. We human-like open a window on the wall or ceiling to see the nice scenery, to feel the blue sky. An opening brings us the atmosphere of outdoor surrounding through displayed the light and shadow naturally, people feel they located in the forest through seeing the bird and free from the window. Also, the thickness of the wall and window frame, that element convince us that the outdoor space is real and exist. However, nowadays the living space is getting crowded and narrow with the population growth, it is much more difficult to open a window and seeing a nice view or even just for illumination, sometimes a window is nothing but a ventilator.

Opening an Opening presents a concept-Spatial Hyperlink. We demonstrated a brand-new virtual opening in order to arouse people’s awareness toward the outdoor or natural environment. The design of the virtual opening consisted of anamorphic computer graphic design. The purpose of our design is to create the opportunity to see the nature of those who live in the enclosed or crowd urban space. Space Hyperlink provides a novel tangible interaction with human and virtual space in response to ‘Space Hyperlink’-the soft interface between human and space.

Sculpturing spaces with light, image, and color

A form is a crucial factor in spatial quality. Form making also takes a large share in the budget structure of the construction and maintenance of buildings. The issue regarding how information technology can be used to alter the form of space for improving spatial quality and reducing the cost of form making and maintenance is relatively poorly discussed in the research discipline of the intelligent/green building. The objective of this project is to investigate methods of designing and controlling light, image and color for shaping the forms of living spaces. With information technology, it is possible to create and manipulate forms of spaces without physically altering the structure, partitions or decoration of the building. Construction cost can be reduced; some materials for decoration can be saved; usages of spaces be more flexible... and so on. The techniques of using light, image, and color for sculpturing spaces would have a contribution to reducing the life-cycle cost of buildings and to quality improvement of living spaces.

The cognition of space is activated by the input of the audio, visual and tangible signal, and then interpreted as space by the brain. The interpretation of visual signal can be regarded as a process of pattern recognition. The brain searches for repetitions, regularities, symmetry, or the breaks of symmetry of the received signals. The brain also anticipates spatial consistency based on perspective projection and physical phenomenon. Other clues that are used by our brains to interpret visual signal include prior experience, important or familiar forms. The cognition of space is an information filling process for that the input signals are incomplete and noisy. Information technology can be used to transfer or to create the desirable input, while spatial design can be used to cause specific interpretation of space.

We generated a virtual anamorphic cube model via software V.V.V.V (a) and projected onto the real space (b). Although the virtual cube displayed completely and correctly on the corner, the surface was separate into 7 partitions (side a =a1、a2、a3, side b= b1、b2, side c=c1、c2 ) due to the ambient light affected and the difference of color on the surface(c). We evaluated the difference of RGB value between each partition and modulated the value of virtual anamorphic cube model in V.V.V.V (d) than re-projected onto the real space, the color of three sides of the cube displayed the three face completely (d)(f).

many buildings have been built inside space(e.g., inside offices or basement facilities) where it is difficult to provide the people with visual access to the outside environment. Virtual opening offers those people to access the natural environment virtually, such as the virtual sky window which projected onto the enclosed stair core. It is not only the virtually opening but also a window like lighting.
